WhatsApp Status for musicians: your song where your contacts look
In many countries WhatsApp is where an artist's closest audience already is: family, friends, the people from the last show, the venue owner. A status reaches all of them without an algorithm in the middle. Here is what WhatsApp allows today, the two ways to put your song in a status and what to post in the weeks around a release.
What WhatsApp allows today
| What WhatsApp says (checked 22 October 2026) | What it means for a song | |
|---|---|---|
| Video length | Up to 90 seconds | A full chorus, or a verse and the chorus |
| Duration | Disappears after 24 hours | Post again on release day and the days after |
| Formats | 3GP and MPEG-4 | Export as MP4 |
| Quality | HD is not supported; quality may be lower than the original | Big, clear text; avoid tiny details |
| Audience | You choose who can see it and can mention up to 5 people or groups | Mention the band, the producer, the venue |
| Music from the library | Photo statuses: clips of up to 30 seconds rolling out since September 2026 (9to5Mac) | Fine for a cover photo; for the real cut, use a video |
WhatsApp also lets you share a status to Facebook and Instagram from the same screen, so one vertical clip can do more than one job.
Two ways to put your song in a status
1. Music from WhatsApp. Create a photo or video status, tap the music icon and search. It is quick for a cover image with a few seconds of the song. The catch for an artist: you only find your song if it is in that library, you pick a section with a slider and the clip length is limited.
2. A video that already has the song. Make a vertical video with the song inside: the chorus over the cover, a lyric video, a clip from the show or the studio. You decide the exact seconds, the sound is your master and it works whether or not WhatsApp's library has the track. For a release, this is the one to use.
What to post around a release
A status lasts 24 hours, so think in a sequence, not in one post:
| When | Status | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A week before | 10–15 seconds of the hook over the cover, with the date | People who see it are the ones most likely to listen on day one |
| The day before | A short studio or rehearsal clip | It reminds without repeating the same video |
| Release day | The chorus with captions + the link in the caption | Contacts can tap it from the status |
| Days 2–7 | A live clip, a lyric video, a reaction | A new angle each day keeps the song in front of them |
| After a show | The best 30–60 seconds of the night | The audience from the show is often in your contacts |

How to make the clip
- Vertical 9:16, 1080 × 1920. The same file works for Status, TikTok, Reels and Shorts. The sizes for every app are in video sizes for TikTok, Reels and Shorts. If your video is horizontal, the vertical video converter reframes it to 9:16 following whoever sings.
- The chorus early. People tap through statuses fast; the first two seconds decide.
- Captions on screen. Many watch with the sound off. Lyrics that follow the voice keep them watching: see karaoke captions.
- Your name and the song title in the first frame, big enough to read on a status that is not HD.
- Under 90 seconds. Most good status clips are 15–45 seconds.
Small things that help
- Put the link in the caption. The status shows the caption under the video.
- Check who watched. Under Updates › My status you see views and likes: the contacts who watched three days in a row are the ones to send the song to personally.
- Don't post ten statuses at once. One or two a day reads like news; ten reads like spam.
- Reuse, don't repeat. A new clip of the same song each day (live, lyric, studio) works better than the same video three times.
If you already film shows or sessions, TONTRIA Clips finds the best moments, cuts them vertical with captions that follow the voice and exports them ready for Status and every short-video app. From a song link it can also make a lyric video for the release day status.
